2010: For 6 (six) consecutive years, with Jack Enos’ leadership, we have set up a net at the river inlet where it empties into stump pond. This net catches “fragments” of free floating weeds, some of which could possibly be variable milfoil. Each of the Balch Lake’s 12 Associations has the responsibility of cleaning the net on a specific week.

The net needs to be cleaned at least 2 times per week. During heavy times 3 times may be necessary. A Wednesday and Saturday/Sunday schedule should be the norm with other visits as needed.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The net is located across the River just before it drains into Stump Pond. You can go there to clean the net either by boat or car. Unless you have a small boat you can work out of you are probably better off going by car and using the small Jon boat that is available nearby. The net is accessible though the yard of the Symonds family. They have donated use of the Jon boat by BLIMP. To get to the site take Rte 153 to Balch Hill Rd. which is a U-shaped Rd. The Symonds place is at the top of the hill near the bottom of the U. Look for a red fish sign with SYMONDS on it. Park in the driveway at bottom of hill and walk around the house and go to the unused dock. The Jon boat is stored on land upside down. Please return it there when done.

NET CLEANING

Cleaning the net is best done with at least 2 people, one to hold the boat in position and one to scoop the milfoil. We will leave a red plastic tub with the Jon boat and some large trash bags. I found it easiest to scoop milfoil from the net and toss it into the tub. Then transfer stuff to trash bags. You should clean both sides of the net since sometimes the wind blows upstream and there is as much or more on the outside.

Please take collected material with you and dispose of it away from the lake. It can be composted or taken to the dump. Remember to clean your prop before leaving the River so you don’t carry some back to your area.
